The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree Programme in Economics is a course work and thesis degree that is focused on developing cutting-edge academic skills that are needed to advance teaching, research and consultancy in finance.  The PhD programme is structured around student mentoring processes management by faculty to inculcate independent and critical thinking, with emphasis on the interplay between theory development and empirical applications.  The graduates are encouraged to foster this culture of scholarship as prospective faculty at higher learning institutions and Researchers and policy makers and analysts. A critical component of the PhD programme is dissemination on knowledge through peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

Overall Goal of the Programme is to develop attitudes, knowledge and skills of learners to evaluate and apply theories of Economics, principles and analytical techniques, interrogate problems in the field of Economics and develop frameworks that provide solutions.

Admission Requirements

The applicant must:

  • Satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission into a PhD programme in the University.
  • Satisfy the entry requirements for admission to the programme in the School of Business and Economics of Maseno University.
  • Have obtained a masters qualification or an equivalent in finance or a related business field. 
  • Satisfy the entry requirements for admission as set out by Maseno University School of Graduate Studies.

Graduation Requirements

A student shall graduate after covering and passing all the course requirements for the eight (8) courses and a thesis. A full-time student for the Doctor of Philosophy programme in Economics shall normally be registered for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.  A part-time student shall be registered for a minimum of four years and a maximum of seven years.  Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress.
