Chair of Department

Dr. George Otieno Obonyo

Maseno University was the first public university to introduce hospitality and tourism training at university level. Since then, other public universities have followed suit by introducing similar programmes. The department has grown overtime and now has programmes running from diploma level, undergraduate level and postgraduate level with a focus on both hospitality and tourism industry. To date, the department has trained more than three hundred graduates who are pursuing careers not only in the region but overseas as well. These include countries such as the US, Bahrain, Qatar, Rwanda, among others. From a national industry perspective, hospitality and tourism graduates from Maseno university graduates are presently working in leading hospitality ventures such as the Serena, Sarova and Heritage chain of hotels, Acacia premier, just to mention a few. Internationally, five graduates have been working in the American Hospitality Academy. Just recently a sixth student from the last graduating class travelled to the USA to join other colleagues making the total number to be six. The Department expects more of its graduates to join this program. The Department has taken this training initiative one-step further by introducing extensive practical training at this particular hotel, the Kisumu Hotel. Indeed, International Cuisine Festival is part of the fourth year Food and Beverage practical training. This is the final practical before these young professionals graduate later in the year. The department also encourages its students to engage in various tourism related activities locally including beauty pageants. Hospitality training is not without its challenges and opportunities. Indeed, we spend enormous financial resources in this particular programme.
