Maseno was the first public university to introduce hospitality tourism training at university level. Since then, other public universities have introduced similar programmes. 

To date, the department has trained more than three hundred graduates who are pursuing careers not only in the region but overseas as well.  Maseno university graduates from this programme are presently working in leading hospitality ventures such as the Stanley, Holiday Inn, Pan Africa Serena, Inter-continental, Nyali Beach, Acacia premier, Whitesands and Voyager Beach hotels just to mention a few. 

Internationally, five graduates have been working in the American Hospitality Academy. Just recently a fourth student from the last class traveled to the USA to join his other colleagues making the total number to 4.  The Department expects more students from this class to join their colleagues in the academy.  

The Department has taken this training initiative one-step further by introducing extensive practical training at this particular hotel, the Kisumu Hotel.  Indeed, International Cuisine Festival is part of the fourth year Food and Beverage practical training.  This is the final practical before these young professionals graduate later in the year. 

Hospitality training is not without its challenges and opportunities.  Indeed, we spend enormous financial resources in this particular programme.  

The department is are very optimistic about the future and hopes that one day, we will have a center of excellence in International Hospitality and Tourism management training in Kisumu to offer more competitive and market driven programmes.  In order to realize this, the department is already working with County government of Kisumu, Tourism Fund, and Tourism research Institute and the American Hospitality Academy in the USA and other relevant organizations across the globe.
